Maui Christmas: Holiday images from around the island | News, Sports, Jobs

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photos

Baking, decorating, shopping, entertaining and just stopping to catch your breath, the holidays can be as much of a whirlwind on Maui as anywhere else. This photo montage features recent holiday images captured around the island.

FIRST PHOTO: Sugar Beach Bake Shop staffer Marcia Smith displays a tray of holiday-themed macaroons Friday morning in Kihei. The macaroons were made by Yoko Naito. Bake Shop manager Barbara Hunton said this has been a busy holiday season for the shop. “I’m so tired,” she said. The bakery is scheduled to be open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, and closed Sunday and Monday for Christmas. SECOND PHOTO: Oversized packages are part of the vibrant holiday display at The Shops at Wailea Wednesday. THIRD PHOTO: Large decorative nutcrackers line a shelf at Marmac Ace Hardware’s Home & Kitchen Store Thursday morning in Kahului. FOURTH PHOTO: A message of hope glowing along Makawao Avenue Tuesday night pays tribute to all the victims of the devasting wildfires of Aug. 8. Makawao resident Billy Jones said he and wife Carice and their neighbor wanted to make sure Lahaina people know they are remembered. And for others to know that while the holidays may be pretty much back to normal for most, there are some who are still mourning and picking up the pieces. “We have family there and they lost everything,” Jones said. “It’s good for people to see, and to know on Maui we stick together. They are hurting down there.” FIFTH PHOTO: If someone doesn’t feel like paying for a poinsettia plant, they can see them for free along Iao Valley Road. A bee hovers above a blooming flower in Iao Valley Thursday afternoon. SIXTH PHOTO: A Santa Claus tabletop decoration shares a happy smile with shoppers Thursday at Marmac. SEVENTH PHOTO: Finishing touches are put on a mango cheesecake by Sugar Beach Bake Shop assistant baker Mana Teraya Friday morning. EIGHTH PHOTO: Alton and Carolyn Nakagawa of Wailuku “walk” their dog Mochi in a stroller last week at Maui Mall Village in Kahului. They said Mochi the miniature Beagle can walk but prefers to ride. “She’s spoiled,” Carolyn Nakagawa said. Mochi was also a snappy dresser decked out in her Christmas vest.
